WWE has loaded up this year’s event with five championship matches and two ladder matches to help determine potential future champions. Before the pay-per-view, check out these stats and fun facts as the superstars return to the road.
SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match (Kickoff)
Dominik & Rey Mysterio (c) vs. The Usos
Both Rey Mysterio and The Usos have a 2-3 MITB PPV record.
The Usos have challenged for WWE tag titles twice and defended twice at MITB.
This is the fourth SmackDown Tag Team title match in MITB history.
Dominik Mysterio is competing at his first MITB PPV.
Rey Mysterio lost the World Heavyweight Championship at MITB 2010 when Kane cashed-in the same night.
Rey has competed in two MITB ladder matches (2011 and 2020).
This is the third MITB pre-show match for The Usos.
The Usos and The New Day have competed in the most tag title matches at MITB with four a piece.
Prediction: Mysterios walk out with their titles
Raw Tag Team Championship Match
AJ Styles & Omos (c) vs. The Viking Raiders
There have been eight Tag Team Championship matches in MITB PPV history.
This is the first Raw Tag Team Championship match at MITB since the 2016 brand split.
AJ Styles has competed in WWE and Universal Championship matches at MITB.
Styles has competed in two MITB ladder matches (2017 and 2020).
This is the first MITB PPV for Omos and The Viking Raiders.
This is The Viking Raiders’ first tag team title match since June 2020.
MITB marks Omos’ second PPV match in his career.
It’s been six years since there’s been a tag team title change at MITB (Prime Time Players def. New Day in 2015).
Prediction: Styles and Omos retain
Raw Women’s Championship Match
Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Charlotte Flair
MITB 2021 marks the third singles match ever between Charlotte and Rhea.
Charlotte is 2-3 at MITB PPVs.
Charlotte has never competed in a Raw Women’s title match at MITB despite being the reigning Raw champion in her tag match at MITB 2016.
In 2019, Flair won and lost the SmackDown Women’s title on the same night.
Charlotte has been the victim of two Money in the Bank cash-ins (Carmella and Bayley). Both were for the SmackDown title.
Charlotte has competed in three MITB ladder matches.
Rhea Ripley has no MITB history.
Ripley will likely hit 100 days as Raw Women’s Champion if she wins at MITB.
Ripley is 2-2 in PPV matches this year, but neither of those losses were by pinfall or submission.
Technically, the only time the Raw Women’s title has changed hands at MITB is when Bliss cashed in on Nia Jax in 2018. However, Asuka essentially won the title last year when she won MITB.
Prediction: Charlotte Flair takes the gold
WWE Championship Match
Bobby Lashley (c) vs. Kofi Kingston
Kingston beat Lashley in their only singles match ever on Raw in May.
Kofi has nine MITB PPV matches under his belt.
Kofi is tied with Kane for the most MITB ladder matches at seven.
At the 2019 event, Kingston defended the WWE Championship against Kevin Owens.
Bobby Lashley hasn’t competed in a MITB ladder match since 2006 at WrestleMania 22.
Lashley has two singles wins at MITB PPVs over Sami Zayn (2018) and R-Truth (2020).
It’s been over 650 days since Kingston competed in a singles WWE Championship match.
Lashley has reigned as champion for over 135 days.
Lashley has a 3-2 PPV record so far this year.
Kingston hasn’t won a PPV match since last year’s MITB when New Day defended the SmackDown tag titles in a four-way match.
The WWE Championship has changed hands nine times thanks to a MITB cash-in.Â
Dean Ambrose is the only MITB winner to cash-in on the WWE Championship on the same night.
Prediction: Bobby Lashley’s reign continues
Universal Championship Match
Roman Reigns (c) vs. Edge
Edge is a former two-time MITB contract holder.
Edge won the very first MITB ladder match at WrestleMania 21 in 2005.
Roman Reigns has never won MITB, but has plenty of history with the concept.
Reigns is 3-3 at the MITB PPV, having competed in Tag Team and WWE Championship matches.
Roman’s only MITB ladder match was in 2015.
Reigns lost his first WWE Championship to a MITB cash-in from Sheamus in 2015.
Edge has competed in three MITB matches, with the last being the Raw ladder match in 2010 at the first MITB PPV.
This is Edge’s second Universal title match in his career.
Reigns has yet to successfully defend a world title at MITB.
Brock Lesnar (2019) is the only man to win the Universal Championship via a MITB cash-in.Â
Reigns defended the Universal title against Braun Strowman inside Hell in a Cell 2018 in one of the few announced MITB cash-ins. That bout ended in no contest.
Prediction: Roman Reigns continues carrying WWE on his back
Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Asuka vs. Naomi vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Nikki Cross vs. Zelina Vega vs. Liv Morgan vs. Natalya vs. Tamina
This will mark the sixth women’s MITB ladder match including both of the 2017 matches.Â
Two former MITB winners in Alexa Bliss and Asuka will compete in this year’s installment.
Carmella is the only woman to hold the contract longer than 24 hours.
Bliss and Bayley both cashed in the same night, while Asuka was awarded the Raw Women’s Championship on the following Raw.
Natalya is the most tenured MITB competitor in this bout with four MITB ladder matches under her belt.
2021 will mark the third MITB match for both Naomi and Tamina.
This will be the second MITB for both Bliss (2018) and Cross (2019).
This is the first MITB match for Zelina Vega and Liv Morgan.
2020 marked the first time a women’s MITB match technically headlined a MITB PPV thanks to the matches happening simultaneously at WWE HQ.
The 2017 MITB match that aired on SmackDown is the longest at 24 minutes.
The very first 2017 MITB is the shortest at 13:20. It also only had five competitors.
Every winner so far has successfully cashed-in or become champion.
Outside of ladder matches, Naomi challenged Paige for the Divas title in 2014 and defended the SmackDown Women’s title against Lana in 2017.
Asuka’s first MITB PPV appearance was in 2018 when she challenged Carmella for the SmackDown title.
Prediction: Liv Morgan becomes a star
Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Drew McIntyre vs. Riddle vs. John Morrison vs. Ricochet vs. Big E vs. Kevin Owens vs. King Nakamura vs. Seth Rollins
This will be the 22nd men’s MITB ladder match in WWE history.
Six ladder matches happened exclusively at WrestleMania, while 15 have happened at the MITB PPV.
Six former MITB participants will take part in the 2021 edition.
Seth Rollins is the only former MITB winner in this year’s match.
Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens have each competed in three MITB matches.
John Morrison will compete in a MITB match for the third time with his first happening in 2008 at WrestleMania 24. His second was the Raw ladder match in 2010.
Morrison and McIntyre are the only two to have competed in a WrestleMania MITB match.
This will mark Ricochet’s second appearance after his 2019 debut.
Riddle and Big E are making their MITB ladder match debuts.
Big E has competed on four MITB PPVs; three of which were Tag Team Championship matches.
Kevin Owens has had five MITB PPV appearances with big U.S. and WWE Championship matches against John Cena (2015) and Kofi Kingston (2019), respectively.
Rollins also has championship history at MITB having competed for the Tag Team, Intercontinental, Universal, and WWE Championship on three different occasions.
Morrison, Rollins, and McIntyre were all featured in title matches on last year’s card. Morrison competed in a four-way SmackDown Tag Team title match, while McIntyre defended the WWE Championship against Seth Rollins.
The 2017 men’s ladder match is the longest at 29:45, while the WrestleMania 22 ladder match in 2006 is the shortest at 12:14.
Seth Rollins held the contract for the longest at 273 days, while Kane held it for only 46 minutes.
Rollins is the only MITB winner to cash-in at WrestleMania.
Damien Sandow and Baron Corbin are the only two to straight up lose their MITB cash-in match.
John Cena and Braun Strowman lost their MITB cash-in matches via DQ and no contest, respectively.
Mr. Kennedy (2007) and Otis (2020) are the only two MITB winners to lose their contracts to other people (Edge and The Miz).
Prediction: Big E is one step closer to winning the big one
